Jindal Modern School Extension
THE PROJECT
This project is a junior block expansion to a growing Jindal Modern School in Hisar, Haryana. Owned and operated by the O.P. Jindal Trust, this school has continuously proliferated since its operation began in 1996. This latest expansion required a separate block for the junior classes to be added to the existing school.

The brief
- In keeping with its specific user profile, the new building had to generate a conducive learning environment for the youngest humans, characterized by a certain playfulness, freedom and safety, all molded with visual and spatial harmony.
CHALLENGES
Being an extension to an existing facility designed earlier by us, the biggest challenge this project posed was to find appropriate space on the existing site for the expansion. There were only two viable locations at the offset, narrowing to the sole selection once the program and areas began to be incorporated.
The site dimensions and shape demanded an approach where the built mass must generate active and playful spaces. The provided program needed an interpretation to create volumes which, when tied together with the connecting usage, created a play that expressed each block as an element placed within a larger space in a playful fashion.
Each module, forming a cuboidal element, with distinctive character and colour, is arranged like a dice thrown on a board. Each element has three sections of the same class & grade on each floor. The classrooms are flexible spaces which can join together to form a large consolidated space with its own open to sky volume. Three sections occupy three corners of a square and the fourth corner becomes a landscaped open court. This configuration provides a secure access to the open area, an important connect with nature to the young users.
The open space hence generated has the playful character and physical dimensions which makes it usable as well as creates continuity with the open space within the built module. This juxtaposition of open and covered promotes bearing while playing.
